Libraries are a Scary Place…For your Laptop: Tips for Protecting your Laptop on Campus

By Nathan Kully Picture this, it’s finals week and you are in the midst of your second straight all-nighter in the library studying for your last two finals. As your eyes struggle to stay open, you decide to leave your desk up in the library stacks and go across the street to the local 24-hour caf to grab another coffee. After a double shot latte and a short conversation with your friends you venture back to your desk in the corner of the stacks to discover your laptop missing. You’re now regretting the decision to leave your books, notes and laptop out at that great spot in the stacks. You ask around to see if anyone saw what happened, but everybody was too focused on their studies to notice someone stealing a laptop. You run to the front of the library, but all you see are the same mass of students cramming. A terrible epiphany dawns upon you and you realize that your laptop is gone! Not only are all of your school materials gone, but all of your personal files on the computer are now in the hands of someone else. University Laptop Theft Trend Computer and data security has been a serious issue on college campuses due to the size and, technology of college networks and the increasing portability of student computers and other school materials. According to MSNBC, “Universities have become attractive targets for hackers who are taking advantage of the openness of the schools’ networks, their decentralized security and the personal information they keep on millions of young adults.” (1) More students than ever are becoming portable by bringing their laptops to class and the library to study outside of their rooms, especially with the increase in wireless technology all across campuses. Students with laptops across campuses are walking liabilities with the data stored on those computers. No space is safe, even within minutes after leaving a laptop in a shared environment, such as the library or common room. In December 2006, two University of Alaska Fairbanks basketball players were convicted of stealing laptops from campus apartments. Laptop thieves can sell not just your laptop, but also the data they find on your machine as well. What Does the Typical Student keep on their Laptop? Laptops have become such a burden for students because of the magnitude of personal information that is stored on them. With the amount of information and the sensitivity of documents compiled on these machines, a lost laptop is even more dangerous than losing your wallet. The majority of documents stored on a laptop are school files such as class notes, essays and class assignments. A thief could take these documents and plagiarize work for themselves, or sell the work to other students. Other students choose to store passwords on the hard drive or on the web browser. Since most web browsers allow users to store passwords and just click “login” at most sites, most college students just simply choose the lazy option. They save all of their passwords in the browser without ever clearing them. Once the laptop is out of your hands; thieves can login to online accounts like email, blogs, favorite shopping sites or online banking without even having to crack your passwords. The last batch of files that could be accessed on a stolen laptop are personal files such as journals, photos, and music. Private documents such as journals and photos are troublesome to lose not only because of your personal attachment to them but also because they could even be used for something as horrific as blackmail. No matter what type of file it may be, if a hacker gets full access to your laptop it could be serious to you on many levels. You not only have to replace the stolen machine, but depending on the data saved on it, you may be faced with years of credit monitoring and worrying about identity theft. How Can You Protect your Laptop? Laptop theft is at its prime right now on campuses across North America. Colleges aren’t able to police every WiFi spot on campus, so students need to be proactive. Here are some tips to help secure your laptop and data as you progress through your collegiate years Never leave your laptop out of your sight if you are outside of your room, house or apartment. While this is a heavy burden for students who take their laptops all around campus, it is still the absolute best option. If you bring your laptop to the library, bring a friend and have him/her look it over while you step away to use the restroom or grab a snack. Consider engraving your name on the back side of your laptop next to the battery. Engraving your name will do little to avoid your computer being taken, but it will help substantially in getting your computer back. Install remote laptop security (RLS) for your laptop, RLS allows a user to access his/her laptop remotely if the computer is stolen and access/delete all important files before the thief has the chance to access them. This gives you the chance to remotely access your protected files and deny access to the laptop thief. Students have begun relying on their laptops for nearly everything surrounding their school lives. Protecting their laptops has become absolutely imperative. Although laptop theft will never be stamped out, students have a number of solutions available to them. By taking some simple precautions, they can ensure that their next trip to the library with their laptop is not their last. End Notes 1. How To Order And Word Your Wedding Invitations

By Victor Epand As with anything on the internet, you’ll need to do some research? Assuming you have not chosen an invitation/company already, you’ll want to do some in-person research at your local stationery stores. Look at the large invitation company books, and be critical of everything: do you like the look of the printing? How heavy is the paper sample? How long does it take to place an order, and then how long before you receive a proof? How long between approval of the proof and delivery of the final invitations? Finally - how much will it cost for the invitation company to do everything you’d like? Can you choose which enclosures to include? Or is it a standard set? Once you have a good idea of what you like, you can either search for a dealer online for the specific invitation you like. When you find one, look for their policy page — what are their policies for timing, delivery, ordering? Do they have a secure ordering site that’s been verified as “Hacker-safe” by a reputable agency? Or do they only take orders by phone and fax? Some invitation companies, such as my own, are very small — that doesn’t necessarily make them any less reputable, but you might want to take some additional things into consideration: how professional is the site? Is there a binding contract (particularly if you’re looking for custom work)? Again, you’ll want to look into policies for timing, delivery, and ordering. With a smaller company, I would also suggest finding a phone number and calling and speaking with the owner of the company. Are you comfortable with this person, and their knowledge and level of professional service? If not, consider working with someone else. When it comes to the enclosure cards, you can always do them yourself. However, there are advantages to having them printed at the same time as your invitations. These advantages are that the papers will match exactly — there won’t be any difference between the color of “ivory” paper from your invitation vendor, and the “ivory” paper you pick up on your own. The fonts, spacing and overall look and feel will be more cohesive if you have your invitation vendor create the additional enclosure pieces, as well. Finally, I always recommend ordering a sample before you purchase, even if you must pay for it. There is nothing more valuable than being able to see for yourself if the paper is heavy enough, the type of printing is what you’d like, and the color is what you expect. All of those things are difficult to represent on a monitor. There are some that considering sending cute black & white postcards for wedding invitations. Just regular black & white postcards that can be purchased in retail store, and then they can write on the back. You can pick out what style of black & white that you would want. Go to a store that you might thing they have it and have them order them in bulk. It’s unconventional and fun! There are a couple of things you should consider (if you haven’t already), though, if you decide to go this route: First, because it’s such an informal invitation, your guests will assume it’s an informal wedding. If you want everyone to show up in black tie (or at least in business casual wear), you’ll have to be pretty explicit about that in the invitation wording, or find a way to let everyone know by word of mouth. Then because you obviously can’t include anything with the postcard, you’ll need to have a way for your guests to respond as to whether or not they’ll be able to come. If your guests are very internet savvy, then a web address (you’ll need to set up a webpage to take responses) or email address ought to do the trick. If there are a lot of senior citizens on your guest list (not to stereotype, but many older folks are a bit techno-phobic), you might want to provide a phone number for your guests to call and rsvp instead. There are “1-800″ phone number services out there especially for wedding responses…I haven’t used them, but I’ve heard of them. It would be a nice gesture to provide a toll-free number for your guests to call and let you know, so they won’t have to pay any long distance charges. Other than those two things, I really don’t see a problem with the postcards. It’s unusual that anyone would receive a hand-written invitation anymore, and that’s a really nice, personal touch. Prescription Drugs-Doctor says-”No”-Internet says-”Yes”

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Lisa_Weinberger] Lisa Weinberger Its after the holidays and you find you have packed on a few extra pounds and want them to melt away as quickly as possible. You call your doctor and discuss your weight concerns with them in hopes they will prescribe one of the many prescription diet pills. Unfortunately for you, the doctor has decided you can lose the weight on your own and says, No. What is your next step in trying to get your diet pill prescription? Not many doctors agree with using diet pills and will not prescribe them. It seems the only thing the US government is concerned about when it comes to drugs is arresting people for the use of illegal drugs like Marijuana. What about the prescription drugs that can be bought through the Internet by anyone? If you have never done a search to buy prescription drugs without a doctors prescription, then you are in for a shock! For years, the elderly have been buying their prescription medication through Canada and Mexico and this is a well-known practice BUT these prescriptions are written by their REAL physician. Are you aware that going to a Website like www.pillrush.com allows you to purchase prescription drugs without a prescription from your physician? How can they sell these chemicals you ask? Quite simply actually; when you go to place your order with the prescription drug of your choice, before you pay, they ask the buyer a series of questions related to their health. Through the buyer answering the detailed questions, the Pharmacist then determines if the prescription drug can be prescribed to the buyer or not. How does prescription drug Websites get around the age of the buyer? Simply by stating a person over 21 must be home to receive the arrival of the package. Are they serious? Do the Websites think this is how they are protecting teenagers from purchasing prescription drugs? This statement reminds me of being 11 years old and wanting to get into a Rated-R movie and asking the first adult that walked by if they would buy the movie tickets for us and walk us in! This was a scary discovery and can be approached in two ways. Either you can be against the fact that prescription drugs can now be more easily obtained or you just discovered a new way to purchase all the prescription medications you want. The catch: If you have insurance, plan to pay for these medications out of pocket. Lisa Weinberger is the CEO and founder of PearlyWrites, LLC. Fast Secured Loan Ensure Speedy Processing And Quick Money Lending

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=C._Carl]C. Carl There are more than one reasons why fast secured loan is getting popular day by day. As a rule it is believed that a secured loan involves a lengthy process. To some extent this statement is true as the collateral related to a secured loan necessitates some paperworks. Sometimes the paperworks related to property assessment prolong over a longer time which is not liked by many borrowers. Keeping this fact in mind lenders have initiated a special kind of secured loan known as fast secured loan. As indicated in its name a fast secured loan is processed speedily and ensures quick money delivery. However, these are not the only benefits provided by a fast secured loan. Rather it has all the benefits of a secured loan. Like any other secured loan a fast secured loan is taken against collateral. The concerned collateral lessens the risk of the lender as he has the assurance that he can get his money back in case of your failure. So he offers the loan giving importance to the demand of the borrower. The most useful benefit of a fast [http://www.uk-loan-market.co.uk/fast-secured-loan.html]secured loan is that it has low rate of interest. Then you have the chance to borrow a big amount; though it will be influenced by the value of the collateral. The repayment installment also will be smaller and the loan period will be extended over a longer duration. Above all the terms of the loan will be flexible for which you can manage the loan easily. Finally it must be mentioned that if you fail to repay the fast secured loan your collateral may be seized by the lender. So it is recommendable to stick to the terms of loan The author is a business writer specializing in finance and credit products and has written authoritative articles on the finance industry. How to Select a Typing Course for Children

By Pamela Connolly A good typing course for kids will teach your child all the routinely used letters, numbers, and punctuation. Here are the most important computer keyboard keys they need to learn when learning how to type. Space bar This key makes a space. Use your thumbs. Enter key This key moves the curser to the next line. Shift keys These keys capitalize the letter you are striking, or type the symbol shown in the upper portion of the key. Use the opposite hand to strike the shift key. Caps lock This key locks in the shift key that capitalizes all letters, but does not affect the numbers or punctuations. Arrows These keys move the curser in the direction indicated. Delete This key erases either the print to the right of the curser or the highlighted area. Insert This key inserts text to the right of the curser. When the key is cancelled (press insert/delete) it will erase as you type. Home This key moves the curser to the beginning of that line of text. End This key moves the curser to the end of that line of text. Parenthesis These symbols are found above the 9 and 0. To open the parenthesis the left hand shift key is struck and simultaneously the 9 is struck, and to close the parenthesis keep the left hand shift key depressed and strike 0. Apostrophe This symbol is found when you move your right little finger from; to the right to find ‘. Quotation Marks This symbol is found when left shift key is depressed and the apostrophe is struck. A good typing course will help your child memorize those computer keyboard keys in a fun, easy way. Solar Outdoor Lighting

By Marcus Peterson Tapping the limitless solar energy is a simple, economical and a profitable way to save depleting natural resources. Solar energy, a relatively new multifaceted concept in energy harnessing, provides us with low cost alternative to traditional lighting systems. The energy of the sun is stored by solar panels or generators by charging long life batteries and discharge of this electricity is stopped by sophisticated proprietary charge regulators when batteries are fully charged. This enables the solar outdoor lighting to work even on cloudy or rainy days. Solar outdoor lightings have progressed from earlier models using incandescent bulbs burning out faster without producing enough light to the present models with LED or light-emitting diode light bulbs and nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal-hydride batteries. These use less electricity and last longer. Another reason for growing popularity of solar outdoor lighting is that it is cost efficient and maintenance free unlike traditional electricity system. The solar panel backed by warranty and personalized power plant energized by sun is not dependant on generating stations, substations, switches, transformers or transmission lines. Secondly solar outdoor lightings are self programmed and if one fails the other light is not affected. A one time installation cost as opposed to running costs towards cables, trenching, metering equipment, construction and electric bills tilts the verdict in favor of solar lights. An effective and working solar outdoor lighting system has an impact on charging of battery and night time use. This is possible with correct placement of solar lighting as a cluttered space with too many trees or obstacles would limit the recharge of batteries. As result the operation time is reduce to nearly 50%. The remaining percentage of usage time may be jeopardized with limited or no availability of replacement bulbs and batteries. One can have perfect setting and fixtures but if there is limited provision of service and replacements the solar outdoor lighting will loose its practicability. For that touch of exclusivity solar outdoor lights of varying sizes and shapes can double as garden accentuations. Place them in shrubs, trees or as pole lamps to brighten up driveways, decks, lawns of residences and commercial establishments. Outdoor Lighting provides detailed information about outdoor lighting, decorative outdoor lighting, low voltage outdoor lighting and more. Outdoor Lighting is affiliated with Gazebos. Practical Tips for the Perfect Wedding

By Yolanda Nash - Practice wearing your wedding shoes for a few days before the big day. Its also a smart idea to put non-skid pads on the bottoms of high-heeled shoes as well. - Remember to allow time for alterations and cleaning if the gown youll be wearing is an heirloom that may need freshening up before wearing. - It is critical to get a good, full night of sleep before your wedding day. With all of the stress, nerves and general excitement of the day its easy for a bride to be worn out before the celebration is half over. - If your maid-of-honor hasnt done so already, pack a small bag to keep handy in your dressing area for emergencies. The bag could contain items such as safety pins, a needle and thread, hairspray, aspirin, nail polish, extra pantyhose and breath mints, among other things. - As a token of your appreciation, select a special gift for your parents or in-laws-to-be to express your thanks and gratitude. This can be presented to them on the morning of the wedding. - Arrange to have a romantic, heartfelt note hand-delivered to your fianc just before the ceremony begins. - Find a pretty handkerchief to tuck into your bouquet so that its easily accessible for the many sentimental moments youll have. - If your ceremony involves candles, be sure to assign someone the task of lighting them at the proper time. - If your ceremony is being held outdoors, be sure to plan ahead for weather related mishaps or emergencies. A supply of pretty umbrellas nearby can really save the day if rain is in the forecast. - Another handy item to have in stock for outdoor weddings, particularly those that are held in the summer months, is bottled water. Guests and members of the wedding party will certainly appreciate your thoughtfulness at the sight of chilled water, especially after standing around in formal wear in the sun. - Ask your bridal party to assemble quickly for pictures so as not to keep your wedding guests waiting too long for your much-anticipated arrival. - Take the time to eat a light snack on your way to the reception as brides rarely get the chance to eat at their own weddings! - Remember to place a guest book at the entrance to your reception. Years later, youll be able to look back at who attended your wedding and what special words of love and wisdom they may have written in your register. - Ask your florist for table hooks so that you and your bridesmaids can use your bouquets as reception decorations. Wedding bouquets can often be heavy so its likely the bridesmaids will welcome having a safe place to keep their flowers while theyre busy at the reception. - Leave your honeymoon itinerary as well as where youll be staying, along with contact numbers, with a trusted family member in case of emergencies. - Dont put off the task of having your gown cleaned, too, long after the wedding is over. Stains that may not be visible now can turn yellow after time and be difficult to remove. Gowns and veils should also be stored in a cool, dry place and carefully wrapped. Carnivorous Pitcher Plants: The Perfect Plants for Lazy People

By Jacob Farin A pitcher plant is a type of carnivorous plant that has tube-shaped leaves, hence the name pitcher plant. Along the rim of each pitcher are glands that secrete nectar. Insects are attracted to this nectar, so they buzz around, licking up all of the nectar they can. Some pitchers even produce an insect narcotic to sweeten the deal for them. Just beneath the rim, on the inside of the pitcher, are glands that produce even more intoxicating nectar. This drives insects crazy, so they reach in, stretching as much as they can to reach the mother lode of nectar, and then they fall in! With some pitcher plants, the tops of their pitchers are lined with hairs that point downward, preventing insects from crawling back out. Other pitcher plants simply have very smooth walls, which are too slippery on which for insects to crawl. Depending on the pitcher plant, there may be fluid produced by the plant that slowly digests the insects. Other pitcher plants simply wait until the insect dies from heat exhaustion or starvation. As the insect decays, the plant absorbs the nutritious morsel, hence the name carnivorous plant. Now, one of the reasons why I grow pitcher plants, specifically the North American varieties, is because I am lazy. Sure the insect-eating part sounds cool, but if these plants needed constant care and maintenance, I wouldnt even attempt to grow them. Like my dog Hank, if you gave me a choice of taking a nap in the hot afternoon summer sun or having to provide constant attention to a collection of seemingly delicate plants, you bet I am going to take a nap and let those plants fend for themselves. That is why North American pitcher plants, collectively known as Sarracenia, are the perfect plants for someone like myself. With these plants, all you need to do is set them outside in full sun, over water them and toss the fertilizer in the trashcan. Far too many folks mistake Sarracenias as delicate prima donnas who need constant attention. These plants are actually quite adaptable to extreme conditions and grow very well in a variety of climates. In fact, you can find many of these plants growing in the wild from Eastern Texas through Georgia and all the way up into Canada! Sarracenias are sun-loving bog plants and enjoy the summer heat. Like kids on a hot summer day, they revel in sitting in water and catching bugs. So set them in a big tray of water and let them catch bugs on their own. Remember, bugs are like little packets of fertilizer. So in a way, these plants fertilize themselves. Now, how maintenance-free is that? So no matter where you live in the world, you can grow just about any variety of Sarracenia outdoors. The varieties that are native to the southern regions of the United States are especially tough and adapt well to lower humidity and hot summer weather. There are long-time pitcher plant enthusiasts in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Houston, Atlanta and Tampa who have successfully grown Sarracenia pitcher plants outdoors with very minimal care. Full sun and a tray of water are all they gave their plants. Sure there are a few modifications to their care when the temperature approaches 110F (43C) or if you have very hard water, but it is nothing like having to mist your plants every hour on the hour or douse your plant with imported bottled water. In most instances, daily top watering is all that is necessary. You can do that when you get home from work, right? Sarracenia pitcher plants really need nothing more than full sun and a tray of water to maintain their stunning and captivating appearance. With my collection of pitcher plants, I grow them strictly outdoors in 8-10 hours of direct sunlight. They all spend their days sitting in pools of water and catching bugs on their own. Because they are native to the United States and Canada, pitcher plants will go dormant in winter and will tolerate freezing temperatures. As container plants, they are hardy to 20F (-7C). When the weather warms up again in spring, they come right back to life. So if you have been hesitant in getting carnivorous plants because of the amount of care you thought they needed, start with Sarracenia pitcher plants. They are easy to grow and nearly maintenance-free. But most of all, they are the perfect plants for people like myself who enjoy afternoon naps on hot summer days. Best Trout Bait With Winter At Big Bear Lake

By David Witthuhn In Big Bear Lake, CA, we definitely have the 4 seasons. Winter especially needs special attention to your bait because the water is so cold. Unless you prepare, your bait will freeze and not float, then sink to the bottom. Also the Trout will have a hard time biting your bait even on a #18 treble hook. Winter conditions are when the water is at or below freezing. The fishing is beyond belief the colder the water gets. It’s almost like fishing in a barrel. I have fun catching and sliding the fish on the ice. In the Spring I dance the fish on the top of the lake so our local Bald Eagles will dive to get the easy treat. I have to just break the line to release. Now back to what you should do for cold or freezing water. Yes the fish are less sensitive when the temp is cold. So you can use even a #14 treble. You can even use the same pound test line of your pole for a leader at this point. Barely bend out the prongs of the treble to show outside your bait. Just as all year, Rainbow Glitter PowerBait is best to use. So it won’t freeze, I mix it with Zekes white trout bait and it is soft enough for the trout and not to freeze. Just when the water gets above 32 degrees, then revert to #18 treble and 3lb test. Also the new Snap’r hook setter has been working incredible up here in this lake. This makes it too easy. I never miss my limit now. You can read about it on my fishing page in Bear Valley News, fishing report. The bite for Winter is on now until late October when the water of the lake turns over. If you have any questions about trout fishing, I’m only an e-mail away. Safe Tanning Ideas

By Fred Riddell Being outdoors is not the only element to take into consideration when factoring in your amount exposure to the sun. You also need to note the intensity with regards to climate, the season, location and time of day. For example, just because you may be hiking in a cool mountain region or snow skiing, doesnt mean you should through all caution aside. Wind and UV rays still reach you so protection would be wise. And surfaces with reflective qualities; snow, water, sand, etc. can intensify UV ray harm. And activities that make you work up a sweat or that involve water, with a potential to wash off your sunscreen, need to be handled a little differently; like basketball, jogging, sun bathing on a hot beach, biking, water skiing, jet skiing, parasailing and outdoor work and exercise. Choose a sunscreen product for these activities with both UVA and UVB coverage and an SPF of 15 or higher, when possible. And for water / sweat activities, choose a product that offers a waterproof or water-resistant agent. Dress appropriately, too, by covering up as much skin as possible, like wearing long sleeves, a scarf or hat, slacks or jogging pants. And dont forget your eyes; the suns UV rays can cause cataracts. There are plenty of stylish UV-opaque sunglasses in all price ranges for both genders in a variety of stores, today ranging from the corner drug store to the local optometrists office. Age There are only a couple words of caution about age. First of all, health care providers do NOT recommend using alcohol-based sunscreen products on children. And they do NOT recommend using sunscreen agents of any type on babies under the age of 6 months. For children older than 6 months, a lotion is the preferred form of sunscreen, over a spray, for example. And the SPF should be a minimum of 15.
